The Taste Gap
Execution is collapsing. Standards are not.
For most of modern creative history, skill was scarce. Tools were difficult. Distribution was gated. Production required training, patience, repetition and often permission. If you could design well, write well, compose well, build well, you possessed leverage simply because not many people could. Talent created separation. Craft created hierarchy. The distance between amateur and professional was visible and measurable. That distance is shrinking.
AI has not merely accelerated production. It has democratized competence. Interfaces that once required years of refinement can now be generated in minutes. Campaigns can be drafted before the meeting ends. Code can be scaffolded instantly. Visual systems can be explored at a scale that would have exhausted entire teams a decade ago. The friction that once filtered seriousness from curiosity has largely disappeared.
As production becomes abundant, judgment becomes scarce.
The question is no longer “Can this be made?” It is “Should this exist?” That shift changes everything. We are entering a period where the constraint is not output but selection. When everything can be generated, the differentiator becomes the ability to recognize what is worth keeping. Variation will explode. Standards will not automatically rise with it. The middle will flood first. The average will become polished enough to pass.
This is the taste gap. It is the widening distance between those who can generate and those who can discern.
AI does not eliminate talent. It exposes it.
When tools were limited, effort could mask indecision. When production was expensive, scarcity could simulate refinement. But when options are effectively endless, execution can no longer hide direction. The work reveals whether you actually know what you are looking for.
Taste is not preference.
Preference says, “I like this.”
Taste says, “This holds.”
Preference reacts. Taste evaluates. Preference follows instinct. Taste integrates experience, proportion, restraint and consequence. It carries memory. It has a sense of time embedded within it, an understanding of what lasts and what collapses under attention.
In an AI-accelerated environment, direction matters more than speed. Many people are mistaking velocity for leverage. They can generate ten options instead of two. Prototype overnight instead of over weeks. Explore scale before committing to it. That feels powerful. But speed without a real standard does not produce excellence faster. It produces mediocrity faster. If your criteria are weak, acceleration simply multiplies the wrong thing with more confidence.
The most dangerous illusion in this era of artificial intelligence is artificial competence.
AI-generated outputs will look finished. Language will sound polished. Visual systems will appear cohesive. Code will run. The surface will increasingly be convincing. But the ability to generate form is not the same as the ability to hold a standard.
We are about to see an avalanche of work that looks impressive and means nothing. Brand systems generated in seconds with no point of view. Interfaces polished but interchangeable. Campaigns assembled from aesthetic memory without conviction. Entire companies shipping artifacts that function but do not stand for anything.
It will look competent. It will also be forgettable. AI lowers the cost of production so dramatically that bad taste can finally scale. And it will. Low standards, amplified by infinite output, do not create innovation. They create saturation. When everything looks good, almost nothing feels authored.
This is where the separation begins. Founders separate from operators. Designers separate from prompt technicians. Leaders separate from managers. AI amplifies whoever is using it. If your thinking is shallow, it will scale that shallowness. If your standards are inconsistent, it will multiply inconsistency. If your taste is refined, it will extend that refinement faster than any team you could have hired five years ago.
The tool does not determine the outcome. The discernment behind it does.
There is already a rush to talk about “taste” as if it were a mood board. As if it were familiarity with aesthetic signals. That is not what I mean. There is something historically unusual happening here. In previous technological shifts, new tools created new elites. Photography did not eliminate painters. It created photographers. The internet did not eliminate writers. It created new distribution hierarchies. Each wave introduced new forms of mastery. This wave is different.
AI does not introduce a new aesthetic standard by default. It introduces optionality. It widens possibility before it narrows taste. It does not impose style. It amplifies whatever style is fed into it. The tool does not create a new hierarchy of skill. It reveals the one that already exists.
In earlier eras, the difficulty of execution protected people from exposure. If you lacked direction, the tool limited how much damage you could do. If your thinking was vague, production friction slowed you down. That friction acted as a gate. That gate is gone.
Now the market sees everything immediately. Your indecision. Your inconsistency. Your borrowed taste. Your lack of restraint. What once took months to expose is revealed in days. The difference between “interesting” and “interchangeable” shows up almost at once.
For founders, this changes the calculus entirely. The competitive advantage is no longer hiring people who can produce. Everyone can produce. The advantage is assembling a team that can judge. That can say no. That can recognize when the output is technically impressive but strategically empty.
AI-native companies will fail if they confuse fluency with direction. Boards will misread velocity as traction. Investors will mistake output for product market fit. The temptation will be to optimize for visible motion rather than durable progress. When anything can be built, governance and standards are exposed. The absence of conviction becomes obvious. Execution becomes easier. Leadership does not.
This is why artificial competence is so seductive. It allows you to look professional without becoming precise. It allows you to simulate maturity without developing judgment. It allows you to reference culture without shaping it. But simulation does not compound. Standards do.
The people who understand this will not look dramatically different in the short term. They may appear restrained to the point of conservatism. But what they ship will feel intentional, considered and like someone made a choice and stood behind it. Over time, that difference becomes structural. Because when production is abundant, the real leverage moves to curation. And curation is a function of conviction.
Taste is not the ability to recognize what is trending. It is the ability to recognize what endures. Anyone can assemble something that looks expensive in the moment. Very few can defend why it deserves to last. As creation becomes effortless, restraint becomes rare.
Saying yes is easy. Saying no requires intentionality. With infinite variations, reduction becomes the rare skill, the willingness to commit to one direction and let the others die. The discipline to eliminate what is merely good in favor of what is necessary. The system will generate endlessly. It will not decide for you. It will offer infinite doors. It will not tell you which one is worth staking your name on. Decision remains human. And decision reveals character.
In earlier eras, you could build a career on execution alone. Master a tool. Deliver consistently. Be rewarded for output. That path will narrow. When execution becomes automated, value moves upstream toward framing, sequencing and the ability to recognize which problems are worth solving and which are sophisticated distractions.
Companies without taste will ship constantly and appear active. They will call it experimentation. They will call it velocity. They will call it being AI-native. In reality, they will flood the market with derivatives of style, of language, of ideas that were already thin before they were automated.
High output with low standards does not produce innovation. It produces a glossy landfill.
Plastic did something similar to culture in the twentieth century. It normalized disposability. What once required care, repair and reuse became cheap enough to throw away. The material wasn’t the problem. The incentive was. When something is abundant and inexpensive, we stop asking whether it deserves to exist. We ask only whether it is convenient. AI risks doing the same thing to ideas.
When polished artifacts cost almost nothing to produce, the threshold for publishing drops. So does the threshold for thought. So does the threshold for commitment. A glossy landfill trains audiences to assume most things are disposable. When the world fills with polished mediocrity, attention concentrates around work that feels deliberate, around restraint, around work that feels authored rather than assembled. The difference may not be obvious immediately. It becomes obvious over time.
Derivative work burns bright and disappears. Authored work compounds. The same applies at the individual level. If you do not know what you stand for creatively, AI will tempt you into imitation at scale. It will let you approximate any style, echo any voice, simulate originality. Without a center, you become fluent in everything and committed to nothing.
There is a reason this shift makes people uneasy. When execution protected you, your weaknesses were private. When friction slowed you down, your indecision was invisible. Now the world sees the output immediately. And output reveals standards. It reveals hesitation. It reveals borrowed thinking. It reveals whether you were ever clear to begin with. AI does not create insecurity. It exposes it.
Here is the uncomfortable truth. Most people are not held back by tools. They are held back by standards. AI removes the excuse. If your work was average before, you can now produce average faster. If your thinking was derivative, you can now generate derivatives instantly. If you relied on friction to hide indecision, that friction is gone.
The tool does not create vision. It exposes whether it was ever there. Authorship matters again. Authorship is accountability, not ego. It is the willingness to stand behind a choice instead of hiding behind optionality. AI increases optionality dramatically. Without authorship, you remain suspended between branches. With authorship, you use those branches as exploration, not escape.
If you have been relying on execution as identity, this shift will feel destabilizing.
If your confidence came from being faster than others, AI erodes that advantage. If your edge came from knowing the tool better than the room, the room now has the tool.
That forces different questions:
What remains when execution is no longer scarce?
What remains when anyone can approximate your output?
What remains when your advantage is no longer friction but direction?
And most people are not prepared to answer it. Judgment cannot be downloaded. It is accumulated. Formed through exposure, calibration, lived standards and the willingness to be wrong publicly instead of hiding inside consensus. AI removes friction from execution. It does not remove the need for conviction. When skill is democratized, discernment becomes the edge.
The gap will widen because standards are. Some will use AI to produce more. Others will use it to decide better. That difference will compound quietly at first, then structurally. In a world where execution is easy, the work moves upstream.
Define your criteria before you generate.
Decide what deserves to exist before you build it. AI will not supply judgment. It will amplify whatever judgment you bring to it.
